It's Over

Christmas is over and it was grand! We had no snow up until the week before Christmas and then it dumped a ton on us including a couple of feet on Christmas day itself. Now when I was a kid we would have taken advantage and gone sledding. My kids stayed inside and played their new video games.

It's Dec 29th and now I have to get the house cleaned up for New Years. Not because I'm having people over, cause I'm not, but because I like to start the new year off clean. That means crisp clean sheets, clean jammies, and a clean house. I think this year everyone will join in on the tasks instead of just me doing them all. I'm sure my 12 year old can scrub the tub just as well as I can and my 10 year old can dust something or wash a floor.

My husband has to work early New Years Day so he won't be staying up late and I think the kids will go to bed early too. I'm the one who will have to put up with them all the next day. If they would only learn how to sleep i…

It's Here!!

December 1st the date that a lot of us busy people dread. Lucky for me I am not one of them. I actually like Christmas and buying presents. I love to wrap them and give them to people. I love the art of figuring out just what that special person would love. Money does not come into my equation because I have very little of it.

I shop when it's not busy in the daytime because I am lucky enough not to have a paying job. This of course means I have very little money. Which leads me to having to be very creative when it comes to gifts. I usually make or bake gifts for people.

For my kids well I have to buy them the latest kid junk that is on offer. Although I shudder to think how much money I have wasted on this junk I can't figure out another way to make them as happy on Christmas morning.

My parents are getting to that age when they have everything they want and really don't need any more stuff in their house cause they are desperately trying to get rid of it all. …

First Snow

November 6, 2008 it snowed for the first time this fall. Lucky for us my husband just got the new snow ties put on the car this morning!

I love the way snow blankets everything. It covers all the dull colors and makes them white and fresh. The whiteness of the snow reflects the dim light of the sun and makes things brighter too. There is something about snow that makes me want to snuggle up inside my house with a good book and blanket. And since we only have a gas fireplace that doesn't simulate the look of a real fireplace at all due to the two small flames of blue fire it produces I may even put my DVD fire on. Yes I have a DVD fire to play on my tv. It's not real but it still does the trick and the sound is the same with the crackles and pops and sizzles as the wood burns down. And no I didn't buy the kitties playing DVD too, just the fire one.

The next person who complains about how much they loath the snow and cold I'm gonna throw a snowball in their face! …

Fall and Birthdays

I love Fall! Not only are the kids back in school and the weather gets cooler but my birthday is usually on or around the first day of Fall. Sept has always been my favorite month.

My husband keeps asking me what I want for my birthday and I've given him a list. Want to know what I put on that list? I told him I wanted a motion sensor light on the front porch, a lined toilet, a new back door, and the roof fixed. No I'm not your usual woman I actually want those things! LOL

I've put up with a dripping toilet for 13 years now and buying a new one and installing it is something my husband can actually do. The light on the porch we never turn on and when anyone comes at night they have to stumble around in the dark. If there was a motion sensor light then we wouldn't have to leave the light on all the time. The back door is an old one with a skeleton key and single pane glass window in it. Do I really need to tell him that it's not secure? The roof leaks a bi…

I Hate Summer

I think I'm the only person I know that hates summer. But I do, I really do! Now I live in Canada so one would think it's cold here but don't let assumptions fool you, its really hot where I live. For the last three weeks we've had temperatures around 35-40C and the last several days it's gone as high as 46C! I think I live in the hottest place in Canada but no one will ever know it cause we don't have a weather station in our small town. It's a well kept secret but then who would want to live in the hottest place in Canada anyway and that's not considering the smelter that's already here and polluting. So we have pollution and extreme heat. The only good thing is we don't have high humidity or we'd all die.

In light of the extreme heat we have two window air conditioners. One in the kitchen window and another larger one upstairs. Great so we can keep cool. It sounds great in theory but in reality it's not so great. Window air…

Almost There!

My kids just got back from camp and they are dirty, tired and happy. Now they have till next Friday before they are off again for another week of camping with my parents. Then it's only a few days until they are back to school!

I hear alot of other parents who aren't excited about the kids going back to school mainly because those parents work. They like the lazy mornings and evenings of summer where for a stay at home mom having the kids home all day means more work and chaos. Anyone who has spent more than a week at home alone with their kids know that this is one of the most difficult jobs there is. It's wonderful too but challenging to say the least.

Me I'm living for the day they are back in school. I'm just a bit tired of having a house full of kids and their friends. Why do they always have to play here? We have the smallest house.

And for those of you who have never owned a black keyboard don't. I have this black one and I can never see the lett…

Summer Fun, Not!

Well of course it has to happen this way. The kids were off to the grandparents for a few days. My husband planned to move bedrooms around and put our daughter upstairs. This involved moving everything out of our storage room to make it into her bedroom. Then there was the flooring to deal with and new lights. We even managed to find a storage locker close and cheap for all those things we have that our house is too small to store. I even told my husband things went too well and I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. And sure enough it did.

Friday my husband was to go out to his parents house and spend a few days enjoying the lake with the kids and then bring them back on Sunday or Monday. Friday I started to feel real bad, nauseous and just not right. He left me at home and went anyway. I was supposed to be finishing up some of the little details to the big room makeover but never really managed it. My husband usually works weekends and had taken this one off so he coul…

Here I sit when I have about 4 other things I should be doing. Is that procrastination or what? Why are all the things we "have" to do not things we enjoy? Why can't all those chores be fun things instead of mind numbing, boredom inducing, acts of sheer hell?!
What? Did you say attitude? You mean if I change my attitude it will change how boring those chores are? Ya right! You can't fool me no matter how many books you've sold or how many people endorse your program. I know what I know and chores are boring, nothing can change that.
But chores can be shared with others like those kids who are mine and my husband's and live in my house. They help make the mess and they should help clean it up. Plus learning to do chores and clean, cook and do laundry is all necessary for them to learn. It's my job as a parent to teach my kids to be self sufficient and I'd be deficient in my duty as a parent if I didn't teach them these things. My kids do …

Long Time No Post

So it's been a few months since I blogged anything. It's not for lack of having anything to say either. It's just, that sometimes it feels more like work than joy and I have so much work and so little joy in my life at the moment that I'll skip the work when I can.

Everything seems to be in need of repair lately. After 18 years of marriage things are just lots of hard work. Even though I know that this is just one of the lows it's still no fun. My daughter has decided that grade four is too stressful for her and has taken to not being able to fall asleep at night. Not only that but she has taken to waking me up to tell me she can't sleep. sigh

My teeth hurt and I have a cold. Not sure if the teeth is because of my sinuses or I need a dentist but since it's likely I need some expensive dental work I'll call the dentist first. I'm betting the expensive dental work mainly because we have no money to pay for it and that's the way things have …

What to Eat?

I'm reading this book called "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver. I just finished reading "The 100 Mile Diet". Well now I feel horribly guilty and really want to start to do something about our diets. Add to the equation that I am a hopeless cook and a picky eater. Now if you don't know anything about either of these books you should read them. They are basically about knowing where our foods comes from and trying to eat according to the seasons. Well I live in an area that there aren't any farms, well not many. We live in mountains with bears and deer who love to munch on anything you try to plant or grow. My parents always try to grow a vegetable garden and have fruit trees but every year the deer munch a good proportion of their vegetable plants before they can fruit and the bears always get the apples before they are even ripe enough to pick. So you can see how this makes gardening for food a huge challenge not to mention ou…

I Like You, Just the Way You Are

I know that when something won't stop rolling around in my head that there's a reason for it. Maybe this is the way real writers get their inspiration for stories? I was chatting with some friends online and we got to talking about depression and medications. I was shocked to hear how many of my women friends were taking antidepressants. It seems that if a woman is unhappy there is some kind of chemical imbalance in her brain now and every reason to prescribe medication for that illness.

Is unhappiness really an illness? Why are so many women and specifically stay-at-home mom's so ill then? What is it about being a stay-at-home mom that drives women to be so horribly unhappy? Could it be the long hours and no pay? Could it be the mind-numbing boredom of daily chores and kids tv programs? Or possibly the no breaks or social interaction? I thought about all of these things for a very long time and they just didn't cut it. There was something more going on here…

Lists, Lists and More Lists!!

I've been feeling overwhelmed lately by all the things I have to get done so a list is the best way to keep track of all those things. Now the list kept growing so I decided to make it more manageable and I divided the list into subgroups. Well even the subgroups started to get too long. So I chucked the lists and just made one with the things I have to do in the next week. If it absolutely has to get done next week it's on the list.

As I read over this much shortened list I see that there isn't one thing on there that I am going to enjoy. Most of them are chores and stuff I have to do for one child or another. I know I haven't made my plan yet but the overall plan is to get my spark back so shouldn't there be something on that list that includes that?

At the very end of the long list of chores and obligations I wrote, "go out for dinner somewhere nice with someone you enjoy." And not only that but the evening must have a theme. The theme should dic…

It all Falls Apart

Okay so maybe the title is a bit of an exaggeration but when one of your kids wakes up puking on New Year's Day at 2 am things get out of proportion. That is so not how I wanted to start my New Year! But as a mom it's my job to clean up and cuddle any sick child that belongs to me. Now we start the sick wait to see if anyone else is going to get sick. I've caught a stomach virus for the last two years in a row after not having one for as long as I can remember. So I'm very apprehensive about this virus. I don't like being sick in a house with only 1 bathroom and 4 people living in it. It's just not easy plus we go through Lysol like mad!

So what have I done to find my spark so far? Ummm well I went shopping and bought a couple of novels to read. I bought some pasta for lunch and a 6/49 ticket (the jackpot is 36million so how could I not?). Now I know that this isn't the groundbreaking kind of stuff that I really need to do but it was all I could ma…

January 1, 2008

Well that's another year gone by. It always seems like I didn't accomplish anything at the end of a year. All those things I wanted to do like get to a healthy weight, clean up the house, get a good job, and a zillion other things, never get accomplished. Why do I want those things but not enough to get off my butt and get them done? Am I just plain lazy?

Should I just give up on these things? Maybe I did make some headway with some of them but not enough to satisfy my perfectionist self. I wonder if I continue to want these things and don't accomplish them will I always feel like a failure. What's it like to make plans and actually complete them?! Wow what a concept. Make a plan and carry it out. Maybe my failure is in not formulating a good enough plan? Yes, that must be it. I need better plans!

So the kids and I sat down and wrote about all the things that we could remember that happened in 2007. We wrote the highlights and any memories we wanted to save.…
