I Hate Summer

I think I'm the only person I know that hates summer. But I do, I really do! Now I live in Canada so one would think it's cold here but don't let assumptions fool you, its really hot where I live. For the last three weeks we've had temperatures around 35-40C and the last several days it's gone as high as 46C! I think I live in the hottest place in Canada but no one will ever know it cause we don't have a weather station in our small town. It's a well kept secret but then who would want to live in the hottest place in Canada anyway and that's not considering the smelter that's already here and polluting. So we have pollution and extreme heat. The only good thing is we don't have high humidity or we'd all die.

In light of the extreme heat we have two window air conditioners. One in the kitchen window and another larger one upstairs. Great so we can keep cool. It sounds great in theory but in reality it's not so great. Window air conditioners make lots of noise kind of like a plane taking off and blow cold air on you. If you are trying to sleep that can be a problem, not to mention the thumping sound they make as they cycle on and off. That's not too bad in the day time but at night it gets rather annoying.

So what usually happens is I stay up late, around 1am, cause I can't sleep with the air conditioner blowing cold air on me all night and the noise. When I go to bed I turn off the air conditioners and open some windows. Unfortunately for me we don't get much of a breeze here and the night air isn't very refreshing so on goes a fan. Depending on how hot it still is the fan will either vent the hot air or bring cool air in. As I said before I'm not a fan of having a fan blowing on me all night but at least a small fan is less noisy and uses less electricity.

Around four or five in the morning I usually wake up with a parched mouth. So up I crawl to get a drink, go pee and turn the fan off. I also have to close the window a bit or the sun will shine in directly on my face in the morning. Not a fun way to get a sunburn.

Some nights I wake up several times to adjust things. I go on like this all summer. I always hope that I'll get used to the fan or the heat or the sun won't shine on my face and I can sleep all night but it rarely happens. And even when it's raining it's another round of adjusting the windows so the rain doesn't pour in and turning off the a/c and fans. Seems like by the time I get used to the heat it's Fall and cooling down.

So I can say I really, really hate summer, and you would too if you lived here.
