I've been reading a lot of mommy blogs lately and have noticed a definite trend. Most of them take great glee in telling everyone about everything they do wrong. It's not that I expect every mom to be perfect cause I don't. It's not that I don't think they should blog about their imperfections it's the attitude they havewhile telling everyone. It's that, aren't I so witty, attitude. I don't know why anyone would think it was funny that sometimes mom's make mistakes or take the easy way to parent. Sure we all do it sometimes but we don't brag about it on a blog. Can you imagine your child coming to you when they are an adult with rotten teeth and asking you why you had to give them a bottle to go to sleep? "Well" you say "I really needed you to go to sleep fast cause I couldn't stand to listen to you cry for a few minutes while you learned how to go to sleep on your own." I don't know about you but if I were that child I'd be right pissed at my mom.
Parents today are too afraid to be parents. They think their job is to make their kid's life as easy as possible. Instead of teaching them life skills they take care of them so they don't have to do it for themselves. That is the biggest mistake you can make for your child. Life is full of bumps and ouchies and the child that learns how to get through them with dignity and grace is the child who has a much better life.
Think what you want for your child. You want them to be happy, strong, healthy and have a fulfilling life. You want them to be able to get through all the problems that life will throw their way. How is never letting them feel pain or disappointment going to teach them anything about how to get through that?
Parents want to be their kids best friend and not the parent. That's a mistake though. A parent who is strong teaches his or her child how to do the right thing no matter how difficult it is. Isn't that what you want to be, a good role model not a friend. Your child is going to have many friends in their lives but what they really need is a parent who is consistent and loving in their discipline not another friend.
I guess those mommy blogs are trying to be amusing and let us know that mom's aren't perfect but what I'd really like to see is a mommy blog that had good advice and showed that no matter how much it hurts you do the right thing for your child and those lapses are few and far between. Being a mom is a difficult job and it starts with pregnancy. No one said you were guaranteed a perfect child, easy pregnancy or pain free delivery. I'm telling you right now that having a baby is the most difficult, painful thing you will ever do in your life but it is also the most beautiful, exhilarating, and amazing trip too. Just don't expect it to always be easy and fun and be prepared to be amazed at how much you can change and grow right along with your baby.
